Nigeria Info has officially launched its flagship program, the ‘I Beg to Differ’ debate competition, aimed at secondary school students. The announcement was made during a press conference for the competition, dubbed the ‘Tournament of Champions.’
Femi Obong-Daniels, General Manager of Nigeria Info, Wazobia, Cool, and Kids FM, highlighted that the debate competition is designed to amplify the voices of Nigeria’s youth. Targeting students aged 13 to 17, the competition will see 16 of the country’s top debaters battle it out in the national finals, scheduled to take place from Monday, August 12th, to Thursday, August 29th, 2024.
The finals will feature contestants from Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja, who will be flown to Lagos for the grand event. The competition will be broadcast live on Nigeria Info across Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja, as well as on Kids FM. Additionally, it will be streamed live on YouTube, ensuring a wide audience reach.
Obong-Daniels emphasized the comprehensive nature of the competition, stating, “The major topics will span politics, governance, current affairs, and human-interest stories. The radio will be on lockdown between 4 PM and 6 PM during the tournament.”
He expressed admiration for the participating students, noting, “From my experience sitting with those kids, I am genuinely impressed by their quality of thought and mindset. As a Nigerian, it fills me with hope. If young people can engage so intellectually with topics like governance, policy, and politics, then there is hope for our future.”
The tournament will be hosted by Femi Obong-Daniels and Yvonne Okhaifo, and will feature a diverse panel of judges, including at least four to five judges and a language judge.
The ‘I Beg to Differ’ debate competition promises to be a significant platform for showcasing the intellectual capabilities of Nigeria’s youth and fostering informed discourse on critical issues.
