Northwest University Kano Hosts Historic First International Qur’anic Musabaqa in Northern Nigeria
History was made on Monday, 4th August 2025, as the Center for Qur’anic Research and Studies of Northwest University Kano commenced its maiden International Qur’anic Musabaqa Competition at the prestigious Professor Hafiz Abubakar Auditorium, City Campus.
The event, which marks a significant milestone for the University and the region, is the first international Qur’anic recitation competition ever held in Northern Nigeria, particularly the Northwest.
Organized under the directorship of Dr. Muhammad Salisu Isma'il, the competition attracted participants from 18 countries, showcasing a remarkable international presence. Countries represented include Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, Chad, Benin Republic, Gambia, Senegal, Jordan, Sudan, Central African Republic, Togo, Côte d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Palestine. Although Saudi Arabia was initially expected, it did not send a participant.
This grand international event follows the Center’s successful National Qur’anic Musabaqa held in September 2024, which had drawn participants from 22 Nigerian states. The upgrade to an international level within a year demonstrates the University’s growing impact in the global Islamic scholarly community.
The opening ceremony of the competition was attended by a large audience, including dignitaries, scholars, students, and international guests. Speaking at the occasion, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, expressed immense joy and appreciation for the growth and success of the Center. He emphasized the University’s firm commitment in supporting such important Islamic events and called for more initiatives that promote Qur’anic knowledge and international cooperation.
Dr. Muhammad Salisu Isma'il, the Director of the Center and pioneer leader of the initiative, in his opening remarks, extended heartfelt gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for his trust and continuous support. He warmly welcomed all international delegates to the city of Kano and wished them a fruitful and memorable experience throughout the competition.
The competition was officially declared open by the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was ably represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Auwal Ahmad Tijjani. In his speech, the Governor’s representative commended the University’s initiative and pledged the state government’s commitment to supporting Qur’anic research, education, and other religious development efforts.
The occasion was further graced by esteemed guests including the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruq Umar Faruq, represented by Gado da Masun Daura, Alhaji Yahaya Nuhu Amasaye, alongside Alhaji Hamza Daura. Also in attendance were Professor Aisha Garba Habib, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Dr. Tijjani Rufa’i Buhari, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), and Adm. Isyaku Adamu, the University Registrar among others.
Highlighting the international credibility of the event, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Jordan, sent a distinguished scholar, Sheikh Dr. Taufiq Damra, to serve on the panel of judges. A representative from Palestine was also present, emphasize the event’s global scope and the University’s increasing influence on the international Qur’anic education landscape.
The International Qur’anic Musabaqa is more than a competition, it is a celebration of Islamic scholarship, interfaith unity, and cultural exchange. As Northwest University Kano cements its place in the annals of Islamic education history, this event stands as a proof to visionary leadership, community engagement, and international collaboration in promoting the Holy Qur’an.
The competition continues throughout the week and promises to be an inspirational experience for all who attend.
