NSUK Suspends SUG Elections Amid Tensions; VC Urges Peace

The management of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has suspended the Students' Union Government (SUG) elections, which took place on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. The decision was announced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman during a meeting with the candidates on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
Professor Sa'adatu expressed concern over the inconclusive results and the disruption of the elections. She stated that the suspension was necessary to de-escalate tensions and prevent potential unrest. An investigative committee will be established to examine the causes of the disturbances that affected the elections. The Vice-Chancellor also assured that security agencies are actively working to maintain order on campus.
Both candidates, Osome Babangida and Ridwan Ahmed Barade, apologized for the behavior of some supporters and committed to ensuring peace and order. They pledged to address their supporters and cooperate with the university administration.
The meeting included the Principal Officers of the University, the Dean of Students Affairs, staff members, SUG executives, and the Independent Electoral Commission (IELCOM). The situation remains under review as the university seeks to resolve the issues surrounding the election.
