NSUK To Reward Faculties With Highest Inaugural Lecture Presentations

In a bid to promote healthy competition among faculties and encourage more Professors to pick up the challenge to present their Inaugural Lectures, the management of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, is set to reward Faculties with the most Inaugural lectures presented.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman gave the hint on Wednesday 29th May 2024 while speaking at the 42nd Inaugural Lecture Series of the University which took place at the Assembly Hall of the University.

Professor Sa'adatu stated that the reward system which will be an annual affair is aimed at identifying and recognising the faculty that has presented the most Inaugural lectures so as to pep up lecturers to make their faculties proud.

The Vice-Chancellor while appreciating the Inaugural Lecture Committee headed by Professor James Jaiyeoba maintained that the University will continue to support the committee to discharge the responsibility of upholding the cherished academic tradition.

Professor Sa'adatu congratulated Professor J.P Mairiga on being the 42nd Inaugural Lecturer and the 11th from the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, she noted that the topic of his lecture " Gene Acetylation Polymorphism (GAP): A Crucial Metric For Unveiling Potential 'Gene Type' As 'Life Gate' For Enhanced Therapeutic Outcome in Disease Infected Persons" as very timely, she charged the relevant authorities to take note of the submissions for possible implementation by Government.

In his lecture, Mairiga Jamey Peters a Professor of Cellular Biology and Molecular Genetics from the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences opined that " the goal of medicine is to discover the cause and remedy of diseases so as to provide a cure, control, or minimize its adverse impact against our quality of life and survival. It also includes the prolongation of life, the alleviation of suffering, and the optimization of the patient's chances for a happy and productive life".

Professor Mairiga stated that " incidentally, the approach to administering medication today does not seem to meet the goal of the prolongation of life, the alleviation of suffering, and the " optimization of the patient's chances for a happy and productive life by the use of "the One-Size Fits All" treatment approach.

He further stated that "till date , mostly in resource limited settings, routine treatment prescription is done without the basic knowledge of an individual's genetic or metabolic capability. Accordingly, a trial and error treatment regime is initiated, often at the expense of loss of valuable time and severe possible side effects".

From the above submissions Professor Mairiga stated that the lecture intends to address the basic concerns of individual variability, susceptible to disease pathogenesis and response to treatment regime especially in resource limited settings or low income economy.

The 42nd Inaugural Lecture Series was graced by prominent dignitaries among whom were the Chun Mada, His Royal Highness, Pastor Samson Gamu Yare, the Vice-Chancellors of the Federal University of Lokoja, and Bingham University, Karu, Professors Olayemi Akinwumi and Haruna Kuje Ayuba respectively and the Commandant of the Nasarawa State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Dr. Onche Odaudu, among several other important dignitaries.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the plaque of honour and certificate to the 42nd Inaugural Lecturer by the Vice-Chancellor and cutting of the birthday cake of the celebrant as the 29th of May is Professor J.P Mairiga's birthday.
