The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of Kwara State University of Education, Ilorin, making it the second state-owned university in Kwara after Kwara State University, Malete.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of the Kwara State University of Education, Ilorin, making it the second state-owned and funded university in Kwara, after the Kwara State University, Malete, which was established in 2009.

The announcement was made on July 30, 2024, in Abuja, where NUC's Acting Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, presented the letter of recognition to the Deputy Governor of Kwara, Kayode Alabi. Maiyaki commended the state for its foresight and emphasized that the new university would help address the high demand for university education in Nigeria. This establishment brings the total number of state-owned universities to 64 and the total number of universities in Nigeria to 274.

Maiyaki mentioned that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had been notified about the new university.

Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi assured NUC of the state government's commitment to adequately fund the university, ensuring it benefits Nigerian students. He also highlighted that the state had developed a comprehensive master plan, academic brief, and enabling university law to facilitate the institution's smooth take-off.
