NUPEC Urges Inclusion of Peace Education in Nigerian School Curriculum

In a significant call to action on the 2024 International Day of Peace, Dr. Chinedu Nneji, Commandant General of the National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC), has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to incorporate peace education into the primary and secondary school curriculum. This initiative aims to instill the values of peaceful coexistence in young Nigerians from an early age.

Dr. Nneji emphasized that NUPEC is ready to collaborate with the Federal Government to establish an effective framework for regulating mining activities, thereby reducing conflicts and violence in communities affected by these operations. He noted that such regulation is crucial for addressing broader societal issues, including those arising from banditry, Boko Haram, and other militant groups.

During his address themed "Cultivating a Culture of Peace," Dr. Nneji remarked on the persistent nature of conflicts that disrupt peaceful living in Nigeria. He stated, “Humans all over the world have managed to live peacefully over the years. This peaceful coexistence is often marred by conflicts of various magnitudes.”

He highlighted the need for alternative dispute resolution and conflict management strategies, stressing that elite skepticism about cultivating a culture of peace must be overcome. Dr. Nneji argued that fostering an understanding of coexistence among diverse cultures is essential for a more harmonious society.

NUPEC's recommendations extend beyond education; they also call for government support in establishing a robust institution to oversee mining operations. This initiative aims to prevent disputes and mitigate violence associated with mining activities while addressing the threats posed by various militant groups through comprehensive conflict resolution strategies.

Dr. Nneji expressed hope that the National Assembly would expedite the passage of the Peace Corps Bill and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sign it into law once it is presented. He believes that the establishment of NUPEC through this legislative action will unlock its full potential and enhance the professionalism of its personnel, ultimately contributing to a safer and more peaceful Nigeria.

As the country navigates its complex landscape of conflict and coexistence, the recommendations from NUPEC could play a pivotal role in promoting lasting peace and stability.
