Nursing Council of Nigeria Approves Internship Program for ESUT Teaching Hospital
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has authorized internship programs at ESUT Teaching Hospital, aimed at boosting nursing manpower and healthcare services in Enugu State.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has granted approval for the commencement of internship programs at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu. This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare education and service delivery in the state.
Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, Registrar of the Council, conveyed this approval during a recent visit to Governor Peter Mbah at the Government House, Enugu. He expressed appreciation for the state government's commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and supporting the welfare of health workers, citing recent upgrades at the Colleges of Nursing, Park Lane, and Awgu.
The Council's approval includes indexing nursing students at the Colleges of Nursing, formerly the School of Nursing, Awgu, which has recently been elevated to the status of a College of Nursing.

Furthermore, Dr. Abubakar announced the immediate recruitment of 50 interns who will undergo training at Park Lane Teaching Hospital. He emphasized that the internship program would significantly contribute to the state's nursing workforce by providing specialized training in midwifery, general nursing, and public health.

Governor Peter Mbah, represented by Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the State Government, commended the Council's decision, highlighting its potential to curb the migration of nursing professionals from the state. He also noted the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for nurses as a crucial step towards retaining skilled healthcare personnel.
