Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) mourns the passing of distinguished alumnus and former Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu. Graduating in 1977, Akeredolu's legacy at Great Ife is remembered for embodying excellence, leadership, and community service. His illustrious legal career, co-founding the Olujinmi & Akeredolu law firm, and subsequent roles, including President of the Nigerian Bar Association, shaped a remarkable journey. In a somber atmosphere, the authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, received the heartbreaking news of the demise of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, CON, SAN, a distinguished alumnus of the University and the Executive Governor of Ondo State until his passing.

Affectionately known as Aketi, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu graduated from Great Ife in 1977 with a Law degree, leaving an indelible mark on the institution as a proud alumnus who embodied the values of excellence, leadership, and commitment to community service.

Following his time at OAU, Aketi embarked on an illustrious career in Legal practice, co-founding the renowned law firm of Olujinmi & Akeredolu with Chief Akin Olujinmi, a former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice of Nigeria.

His legal prowess and dedication to public service led him to become the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in 2008. Subsequently, he served two terms as the Executive Governor of Ondo State, from February 24, 2017, until his untimely demise on December 27, 2023.

Governor Akeredolu's leadership during his tenure was marked by an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people, economic development, education, equal rights, security, and the rule of law. His contributions to the University community played a crucial role in shaping a legacy of academic achievement and civic responsibility.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simone Bamire, on behalf of the University Community, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and associates of the late Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, especially the Government and people of Ondo State. The loss of Aketi is described as a significant blow to both the nation and the University.

"His memory will forever be etched in the annals of both the University and the state," stated Professor Bamire.

The University community expressed solidarity with Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the spouse of the late Aketi, and his children during this difficult time.
