Parents Sue School Over Student Receiving 'D' After Using AI for Social Studies Project
The parents said there is no rule in the student handbook against using artificial intelligence
Parents of a Massachusetts high school senior have filed a lawsuit against his teachers and the school after their son received detention and a "D" grade for using artificial intelligence (AI) in a social studies project. According to Jennifer and Dale Harris, their son was wrongfully accused of cheating due to no existing rule against AI use in the school's handbook.
The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts’ Plymouth County District Court, argues that the grade is causing "irreparable harm" by jeopardizing their son’s admission to top-tier colleges, including Stanford and MIT. "He's been punished for a rule that doesn't exist," Jennifer Harris told local news.
The school's administration labeled the incident as plagiarism, a claim contested by the Harris family and their lawyer, Peter Farrell. Farrell emphasized the ongoing debate about AI and plagiarism. The family maintains that the school only added the rule against AI after the incident, impacting their son who already missed rolling admissions for his chosen colleges, despite scoring perfectly on his ACT.
