Veterinary students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) have again affirmed their commitment to improving the health status of domestic animals.
Demonstrated during a one-day free veterinary medical outreach organized by the Association of Veterinary Medical Students (AVMS), the event was held earlier this week, in Dundaye in partnership with Honourable Nura Shehu Tangaza, the Commissioner, Ministry of Environment.
The outreach had in attendance the presence of residents from across the Dundaye community and dignitaries, including Alhaji Sirajo Abubakar, the Sokoto State Project Coordinator; MLS Abdulaziz Sodiq from the Ministry of Environment; Dr A. M. Mayaki, representing the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine; Dr Bashar Gwanda, Director of Veterinary Services and Assistant Director from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development; Dr Abubakar Dingyadi, Head of Veterinary Doctors in Sokoto; representatives from Aliyu Jodi Veterinary clinic, among many others.
Speaking during the outreach, Honourable Nura Shehu Tangaza appreciated their genuine concern to treat domestic animals suffering from various ailments.
“This would help promote animal welfare in Sokoto,” said Hon. Tangaza, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring animal welfare is prioritized.
The outreach also involved providing essential medications and vaccinations to hundreds of animals.
As to their approach, Ahmad Muhammad Bako, the association’s president, says that to ensure animal welfare isn’t compromised, those who own livestock and domestic animals are encouraged to seek the services of a professional veterinary doctor whenever their animals fall ill.
