In a bold move to address the growing skills shortage and promote sustainable job creation in Nigeria, the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, Awka chapter, Anambra State, has called for a paradigm shift in the approach to education. During a hybrid Webinar to commemorate the 2024 International Day of Education, the Seadogs emphasized the importance of learning relevant skills for self-reliance and productivity.
The event, titled "Education a Means to Development," highlighted the need for society to prioritize skills learning over certificates and qualifications. The lead speaker, Ms. Jedidiah Uche, delivered a powerful message on "Education For Lasting Peace," stressing that true education goes beyond acquiring certificates and is about positively influencing society with the skills gained.

Uche expressed concern over individuals holding certificates they cannot defend, leading to a situation where they are easily influenced instead of becoming influencers and positive change champions. She remarked, "It is not everybody with a certificate that is educated. People have placed enormous emphasis on the certificate and not on what needs to be learned, which is more important."

Dr. Vincent Onwughalu, a university lecturer and Cap’n Honduras Deck, supported the call for a shift in emphasis. He emphasized that education is a crucial tool for peace and sustainable development in society. According to Onwughalu, certification and learning are evidence that one has undergone the education process, serving as primary drivers of change and development.
Moderator Emmanuel Udeh challenged the misconception that uneducated individuals control public affairs while the educated struggle. Udeh stated, "Education has a key role in changing people’s lives. Even if you are not employed, education is not necessarily about having a certificate but about what you can obtain as an individual, creating something for yourself."

As the debate over the role of education in national development continues, the Seadogs Confraternity's stance adds a new perspective to the ongoing discourse on education, skills acquisition, and their impact on the socio-economic landscape.
