Senate Approves Second Reading of Bill to Establish Federal University of Technology, Ilaro

The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro, Ogun State, as it passed the bill for second reading on Thursday.

Sponsored by Senator Solomon Adeola Olamilekan, the bill seeks to elevate the 44-year-old Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, to the status of a university. Senator Adeola emphasized the need to address technological gaps in the southwestern region of Nigeria, particularly in Ogun State, which he described as the most technologically developed state in the entire South West.

Explaining the rationale behind the bill, Senator Adeola noted that the proposal had been introduced in 2017 and had previously passed through the 9th Senate. However, it was sent to the House of Representatives for concurrence before the session lapsed.

According to Senator Adeola, the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro, would represent an upgrade of the existing polytechnic, which was founded in 1978. He highlighted that the polytechnic has already received accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and currently offers degree courses.

Furthermore, Senator Adeola emphasized that the establishment of the university would not only contribute to technological development but also help in balancing educational infrastructure in the South West region.

Support for the bill was echoed by Senator Ali Ndume, who shared his personal connection to Ilaro, having served his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, in 1979. Senator Ndume highlighted the existing infrastructure in Ilaro and expressed confidence in the potential of the proposed university.
