South African Woman Makes History as Youngest PhD Graduate at Wits University

Nomhle Ngwenya, a young and exceptionally talented South African, has made history at Wits University in Johannesburg by becoming the youngest person ever to earn a PhD degree at the age of 25. Ngwenya achieved this milestone in Geography and Environmental Science, marking a significant academic accomplishment both for herself and the institution.
Taking to Twitter to share her joy, Ngwenya expressed profound gratitude, stating, "I was honored today to have graduated with my fellow PhD Grads. I’m truly humbled to be the youngest ever graduate at Wits at 25 to have obtained a PhD in Science."

Ngwenya's academic journey began at Wits University, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and Sociology, followed by a Master’s Degree in Geography and Environmental Sciences. She completed her PhD within a remarkable seven-year period, attributing her success to resilience, passion, and unwavering determination.
Under the guidance of her supervisor, Prof Simatele, Ngwenya undertook a significant research project focused on innovative financial mechanisms in the bond market and their potential role in financing the low carbon transition in South Africa.
Reflecting on her achievements, Ngwenya thanked everyone who supported her throughout her academic journey, emphasizing the invaluable contributions of her research participants.
Looking ahead, Ngwenya expressed her commitment to continuing her contributions in research and innovation, particularly in climate change and decarbonization strategies in developing regions.
