Taraba State University Hosts Tree Planting Event to Combat Climate Change

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Taraba State University, Jalingo, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, along with key university Management, welcomed several dignitaries for a significant tree planting session aimed at addressing climate change and to celebrate the World Environmental Day.

Among the distinguished guests were Honourable Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change, Haj. Aishat Barde; Honourable Commissioner of Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin; and Honourable Commissioner of Waste Management and Resource Innovation, Hon. Shonzen James Benard.

The Vice-Chancellor was joined by DVC Administration, Dr. Jonathan Reuben; DVC Academic, Dr. Ahmad Baba; DVC University Development Services, Prof. Mahmud Hamidu Umar; and Registrar, Joseph U. Bibinu, as well as other management staff. They all participated actively in the event, emphasizing the urgent need for environmental conservation.

During the session, Prof. Bako outlined several common causes of climate change in the region, such as illegal tree cutting and indiscriminate bush burning. He stressed the importance of not only planting trees but also nurturing them to ensure their growth and sustainability. This initiative, he said, is crucial for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change in the university community and the state at large.

In a symbolic gesture, the Vice-Chancellor and the Honourable Commissioners planted and named trees in honuor of various notable individuals, including His Excellency Dr. Agbu Kefas, Barr. G.T. Kataps, Dr. Augustina Godwin, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, Prof. Leslie D.J. Roger, Haj. Aishat A. Barde, and Rev. Jolly T. Nyame.

To mark the occasion, Honourable Commissioner Haj. Aishat Barde presented a Certificate of Honour to Prof. Sunday Bako in recognition of World Environment Day. This certification also included the commitment to planting fifty trees within the university.

The event highlights the genuine effort between the university and state executive government to build a greener, more sustainable environment through proactive tree planting and environmental education.
