President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the statement, the renaming is intended to honor the late statesman and preserve his legacy while promoting values such as integrity, patriotism, and nationalism among future generations.
Yusuf Maitama Sule, who lived from 1929 to 2017, was a prominent political figure and diplomat who played a key role in Nigeria’s development. He served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and led the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid. His political career also saw him hold several critical positions, including Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959), Leader of Nigeria’s Delegation to the Conference of Independent States (1960), Minister of Mines and Power, and the country’s first Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints (1976).
The Federal University of Education, Kano, is one of seven specialized universities of education established by the Federal Government. It remains committed to training educators to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector and improve teaching standards nationwide. The renaming of the institution underscores the government’s recognition of Yusuf Maitama Sule’s enduring contributions to the country’s political and diplomatic landscape.
