UAT Launches Student Work Scheme to Support and Empower Students

The University of Africa, Toru-Orua Vice-Chancellor, Professor Solomon Ebobrah, yesterday officially flagged off the university’s Student Work Scheme, a new initiative designed to provide financial support for indigent students while instilling the values of hard work, responsibility, and self-reliance.

The University of Africa, Toru-Orua Vice-Chancellor, Professor Solomon Ebobrah, yesterday officially flagged off the university’s Student Work Scheme, a new initiative designed to provide financial support for indigent students while instilling the values of hard work, responsibility, and self-reliance.

Introduced by the Directorate of Student Support, Welfare and Well-being, the scheme allows students to participate in various roles across the university, enabling them to earn income without compromising their academic commitments.

At the launch, Professor Ebobrah noted that the scheme aligns with the university’s mission of promoting creative hard work, excellence, and responsible citizenship. He emphasized that students involved would not only gain financial benefits but also contribute positively to the growth and development of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the 41 student volunteers for their courage and commitment, encouraging them to focus on their tasks despite potential teasing or discouragement from peers. He also directed the directorate to provide all necessary support, ensuring flexibility to accommodate academic schedules.

In her remarks, the Acting Director of the Directorate, Dr. Stella Akinola, thanked university management for its continuous backing, highlighting that the scheme reflects global best practices in student empowerment. She urged the student volunteers to approach their roles with diligence, reminding them that there is dignity in labour. Dr. Akinola also revealed plans to roll out additional support schemes to further enhance students’ academic and personal development.

The launch of the Student Work Scheme marks a key step by UAT in fostering self-sufficiency, practical experience, and a culture of responsibility among its student body.
