UI Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Aderonke Mojisola Baiyeroju, Retires

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, of the University of Ibadan, Professor Aderonke Mojisola Baiyeroju, has retired from the service of the university upon attaining the retirement age of 70.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ibadan, Professor Aderonke Mojisola Baiyeroju, has formally retired from the institution after attaining the statutory retirement age of 70. Her retirement took effect on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

Professor Baiyeroju, who was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) on November 9, 2021, has had a distinguished career in medicine, academics, administration, and sports spanning several decades.

Born in Benin City to the family of the late David Olatunde and Marian Olutunde Agbeja, she hails from Ijesha, Osun State. She began her early education at UMC Demonstration School, Ibadan, attended St. Anne’s School, Molete, for her secondary education, and later completed her A-Levels at Queen’s School, Ibadan, and Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro, Ogun State.

She studied Medicine at the University of Ibadan, graduating with an MBBS degree in 1979. She furthered her studies in ophthalmology, earning the Diploma in Ophthalmology of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (1982), Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow (1985), and Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UK (1989). She was also awarded the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (1989), International College of Surgeons (1997), and the Nigerian Academy of Medicine (2020).

Prof. Baiyeroju joined the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, in 1987 and became a Professor of Ophthalmology in 1998. She also served as an Honorary Consultant at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where she taught medical students and trained resident doctors. A specialist in Paediatric Ophthalmology with interest in Glaucoma, she served as Acting Head of Department (1995–1997), substantive Head of Department (1999–2003), and Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine (2006–2010).

She successfully managed several international grants, including a WHO-funded project on child eye care in Oyo State (2004–2008), and the “Seeing is Believing” initiative, sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank and executed by CBM Nigeria, to combat childhood blindness in Southwest Nigeria (2017–2020).

Beyond the university, she made significant contributions to the West African College of Surgeons (WACS), where she served as Chairman of the Faculty of Ophthalmology (2003–2007), Member of Council (2007–2013), Assistant Honorary Treasurer (2013–2017), and Honorary Treasurer (2017–2021).

An accomplished sportswoman, Prof. Baiyeroju won a gold medal in the high jump at the 1977 ECOWAS Games and was once Nigeria’s number four seed in squash (1978). She was a recipient of the University of Ibadan scholarship for best female athlete during her medical training (1974–1979), inducted into the UI Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, and honoured as “Brownite of Honour” by Alexander Brown Hall in 1997.

She has attended numerous international scientific conferences and published over 100 peer-reviewed papers.

Professor Baiyeroju is married to Brigadier General Akin Baiyeroju (Rtd.), and their marriage is blessed with children.

The Registrar of the University of Ibadan, G.O. Saliu, officially announced her retirement in a statement.
