UNIABUJA Students Shine at Nigerian Japanese Speech Contest

Three graduates and two students of the University of Abuja have won various prizes at the 3rd Nigerian Japanese Speech Contest Award. The event  held  at the official residence of the Japanese ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Kazuyoshi Matsunaga,  on 26th  March 2024. 

The graduates were Ani Stephen Lorenzo, who  won the Grand Prize; Ogunjobi Eniola Abimbola,  Excellence Award; and Obiozor Emmanuel Ifeanyi, who received an  honourable mention.

Muhammed Khadijat Ismail (300 level student of Department of Medicine and Surgery) and Lawal Ayomide Gerald (400 level student  of Department of Philosophy),  won the  Excellence Award and Embassy Special Award, respectively.

The award winners  were also treated  to a sumptious  Japanese meal  for the first time.

Dr Mitsuaki Morita, acting director of the Japanese Language and Culture Institute, University of Abuja, said it was encouraging to note the increasing interest in the study of Japanese language and culture by many students in the University, even though the number of learners in Nigeria was  still generally small.

He said, " But I am sure that  if they study hard, they will have great opportunities. I do hope that they will stay motivated and keep working hard with their friends to become a bridge between Japan and Nigeria in the future."
