UNICROSS VC Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Practical Training, Supports Technologists’ Role

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Professor Francisca Bassey, has reiterated the institution’s full commitment to empowering Academic Technologists in their vital role of facilitating practical training across departments.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Thomas Ojikpong, the Vice Chancellor made this assurance during a courtesy visit by officials of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), UNICROSS branch.

Professor Ojikpong underscored the indispensable role of practical learning in higher education, especially in technology-based disciplines. He noted that an overemphasis on theory without corresponding hands-on experience limits students’ competence and employability.

“It is a misnomer for any lecturer to focus solely on theory and neglect practicals,” he stated. “Even a First-Class degree in Computer Science holds little value if the graduate cannot operate a computer system. In today’s Nigeria, where skill acquisition is critical, practical training must take center stage.”

He further assured that the university management would direct Heads of Departments to prevent encroachment on the duties of Technologists, emphasizing the administration’s resolve to restore professionalism and enhance academic quality at UNICROSS.

“This new management is determined to correct past lapses,” Ojikpong said. “We are committed to integrity, collaboration, and raising the standards of the university.”

Earlier, the Chairman of NAAT, UNICROSS branch, Mr. Vincent Etta, expressed concern over the persistent encroachment of Technologists’ duties by some lecturers. He cited policy documents from the university, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), which clearly outline Technologists’ responsibilities but are often disregarded.

“Only a few departments and lecturers respect the designated roles of Technologists,” he lamented. “We are not here to create tension but to strengthen the system. Our goal is to contribute meaningfully to the university’s mission, provided we are allowed to perform our duties.”
