UNILAG Lecturer Professor Ayoola Urges Integration of Conservation and Aquaculture to Secure Nigeria’s Food Future
Delivering the 455th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Simeon Oluwatoyin Ayoola, a Professor of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, has called for a critical shift toward sustainable aquaculture practices.
In his lecture, titled from the lens of environmental stewardship and fish production, Professor Ayoola emphasized that Nigeria’s path to food security must not come at the expense of its aquatic ecosystems. He argued that the "urgent integration" of environmental conservation with modern fish farming techniques is the only way to protect biodiversity while meeting the protein needs of a growing population.
The Professor noted that while aquaculture is vital for economic growth, unregulated practices pose a threat to water quality and natural habitats.
He advocated for the adoption of eco-friendly farming systems and data-driven monitoring to mitigate the impact of climate change on aquatic life.
Professor Ayoola urged stakeholders and the government to implement stricter environmental standards to ensure that the blue economy remains a viable resource for future generations.
The Vice-Chancellor and members of the University Senate joined a diverse audience of academics and industry experts to celebrate this milestone, which underscores UNILAG’s continued leadership in research and sustainable development.
