UNILAG Partners with U.S. Mission for ‘Democracy in Action’ Forum on U.S. Electoral Proces
University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the United States Mission, held an interactive session titled “Democracy in Action: Understanding the U.S. Election Process” on October 29, 2024
In a bid to deepen understanding of the United States electoral process and promote civic awareness, the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the United States Mission, held an interactive session titled “Democracy in Action: Understanding the U.S. Election Process” on October 29, 2024. The event took place at the Senate Lounge, drawing participants from institutions such as Trinity University and Yaba College of Technology (YABATech).
Keynote speakers included Professor Gabriel Babatunde Babawale, an expert in Political Economy at UNILAG, and Mr. Michael Ervin, Political and Economic Chief at the U.S. Consulate in Lagos. Their insights offered attendees a comparative look at democratic systems in the U.S. and Nigeria, with an emphasis on fostering democratic values.
Professor Babawale discussed the U.S. two-party structure, detailing its origins and highlighting how the Electoral College often limits third-party representation. “Each state allocates electors based on congressional representation,” he explained, “with most states adopting a winner-takes-all system, making it challenging for third-party candidates to gain traction.”
Mr. Ervin emphasized the significance of voter engagement and civic participation, noting, “Understanding elections fosters democratic values globally.” He addressed shared challenges in modern democracies, focusing on election integrity and the risks of misinformation.
A dynamic Q&A session followed, with students raising questions on voting rights, the role of technology, and media literacy. This event reflects a sustained commitment by both the U.S. Mission and UNILAG to empower Nigeria’s youth as informed, active citizens in their political landscapes. https://unilag.edu.ng/?p=43994
