Aworetan Oluwashina, a 300-level Philosophy student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who was reported missing, has reappeared, clarifying that he was not actually missing but had left the school due to the significant increase in tuition fees. Oluwashina stated that he went to work to raise money after encountering financial difficulties caused by the tuition hike.
Aworetan Oluwashina, a 300-level Philosophy student at the University of Lagos (Unilag), who had been reported missing for several weeks, has resurfaced, clarifying that he was not actually missing but had left the school premises due to the significant increase in tuition fees.
On March 7, concerns were raised by SaharaReporters regarding Oluwashina's disappearance, as he had not been seen by his classmates for over two weeks. His elder brother, Aworetan Soji, confirmed the disappearance, expressing worry over Oluwashina's whereabouts, and mentioned that the family had reported the incident to the University of Lagos Dean of Students Affairs.
However, in an interview with Segun O’Law of Objective TV, Oluwashina explained that he had left the university to work and raise money after encountering financial difficulties caused by the recent hike in tuition fees. He clarified that his absence was not due to any personal emergency or safety concern but was a result of his efforts to gather funds for his education.
Oluwashina disclosed that he had come across a job opportunity while near the university junction, offering a salary of N40,000. However, upon further inquiry, he realized it was a network marketing job. Despite this, he decided to pursue the opportunity as a means to gather funds for his tuition fees.
Although Oluwashina acknowledged missing some examinations during his absence, he expressed regret that he had not been able to raise the required funds. He further explained that upon his return, he was informed by the Dean of Student Affairs that he could not register for the current semester due to the commencement of exams and the closure of the registration portal.
The University's requirement for course registration mandates that students must settle their tuition fees beforehand. As a result, Oluwashina found himself unable to register for courses for the current semester.
Oluwashina's reappearance sheds light on the financial challenges faced by students amidst tuition hikes, highlighting the struggles many students encounter in accessing higher education.
