LASU Student Maria Soniregun Inaugurated as 5th Speaker of Lagos State Youth Parliament

Maria Itunu Soniregun, a 200-level Philosophy student at Lagos State University (LASU), has been appointed as the 5th Speaker of the Lagos State Youth Parliament, making her the youngest and first female to hold the position.

Maria Itunu Soniregun, a 200-level student from the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Lagos State University (LASU), has assumed the prestigious position of the 5th Speaker of the Lagos State Youth Parliament. In a historic moment on Monday, March 11, 2024, Soniregun, the first female and youngest individual to hold this position, was formally inaugurated.

Following her inauguration, Soniregun paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM. She was warmly received by Prof. Olufunsho Omobitan, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Expressing her delight at the opportunity to serve as the Speaker, Soniregun credited her success to the solid foundation and mentorship provided by LASU and her dedicated lecturers. She commended the university's management for fostering an environment conducive to the growth of young leaders like herself.

Facilitating the visit, Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi, Director of the Directorate of Special Interventions and a professor in the Department of Philosophy, affirmed Soniregun's sentiments regarding LASU's commitment to grooming future leaders. He highlighted that Soniregun's representation of the university filled the institution with pride and joy.

In response, Prof. Omobitan extended heartfelt congratulations to Soniregun on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. He expressed his joy at her remarkable achievement and encouraged her to uphold the values of integrity and excellence as an ambassador of LASU. Prof. Omobitan also offered prayers for Soniregun's success in her new role.

Dr. Lateef Sekoni, Deputy Registrar of the Vice Chancellor's Office, and Dr. Lateef Salami, Special Assistant to the VC, were also present to welcome Soniregun and her entourage.
