UNILAG Sustainability Challenge 2.0 March Winners Rewarded for Efforts in Plastic Bottle Recovery
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) celebrated the success of its Sustainability Challenge 2.0 in March 2024, with a total recovery of 621,661 plastic bottles.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has celebrated the success of its Sustainability Challenge 2.0 as it announces the recovery of 621,661 plastic bottles in March 2024, showcasing a commendable collective effort from staff, students, and stakeholders across the campus.
During the bimonthly Prize Presentation Ceremony held at the UNILAG Green Hub on Thursday, March 28, 2024, Dr. Abdulganiyu Adelopo, the Project Lead/Coordinator, highlighted the significant progress achieved despite falling short of the 750,000 target for the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic session by 128,339 bottles. Dr. Adelopo commended the impressive level of awareness and participation exhibited in the Sustainability Challenge 2.0, noting its substantial improvement compared to the previous academic session.
March's top achievers include Oladapo Olayinka, who individually recovered 52,938 plastic bottles, followed by Joy Eniola with a recovery of 18,023 bottles. Additionally, the UNILAG International School (ISL) and the UNILAG Sports Centre contributed significantly, recovering 18,350 and 14,311 plastic bottles respectively.

Architect Olaide Oladokun, Head of Physical Planning at the Department of Works and Physical Planning, UNILAG, commended all participants for their dedication and emphasized the positive impact of the Sustainability Challenge, particularly along the UNILAG coastal line.
Initiated during the 2022/2023 academic session, the UNILAG Sustainability Challenge aims to combat plastic pollution by curbing the disposal of plastic bottles into the lagoon, reducing CO2 emissions associated with plastic production and incineration, and incentivizing plastic sorting efforts on campus.
With a target of tracking, collecting, and recycling 750,000 plastic bottles within the first semester of the ongoing 2023/2024 academic session, the Sustainability Challenge continues to garner support and engagement from the UNILAG community in its mission for environmental sustainability and responsibility.
