Vice Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, emphasized that the university is well-prepared for this partnership, boasting the necessary human and infrastructural resources. He highlighted the benefits of the collaboration, particularly the opportunity for postgraduate students to be supervised by experts across WACP's network.
"In a world where there is a greater drive for science research, this complementary partnership is timely. We are fully equipped with the necessary resources to support this initiative," said Prof. Fatusi. He added, "UNIMED is the first university that WACP is partnering with. Our curriculum is ready based on the National Universities Commission (NUC) criteria, and we have already begun test-running with a pilot PhD programme enrolling over 50 students. WACP's involvement will deepen, strengthen, and broaden our academic offerings."
Prof. Fatusi explained that the partnership allows students to benefit from the expertise of WACP professionals, expanding beyond the university's faculty. "Students in our PhD programme will have the advantage of being supervised by specialists across WACP, enhancing the quality and breadth of their academic experience," he stated.
Chairman of WACP, Jeremiah Madaki, expressed optimism about the partnership, noting its potential to provide complementary skills to medical doctors, thereby enhancing their performance. "The partnership with UNIMED aims to offer a PhD that will equip medical doctors with skills that complement their professional training. This initiative seeks to enhance the quality of healthcare services by integrating advanced academic and professional training," said Madaki.
He elaborated on WACP's existing fellowship programme, which provides professional training to doctors. The new partnership will introduce additional skills through the PhD programme, further elevating the standard of medical education and practice in Nigeria and West Africa.
