The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) has announced the approval and launch of two new academic programs: Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) and Bachelor of Science in Speech Language Therapy (B.SLT). The programs, starting in the 2024/2025 academic session, have been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), signaling a significant step in UNIMED's mission to expand its offerings in medical and health sciences education.
NUC Approval
The NUC, through a letter with reference number NUC/AP/S33/VOL 1/40, signed by Acting Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, officially granted UNIMED the authority to offer these programs. The new academic session is set to begin on October 6, 2024. This development underscores the university's readiness to deliver high-quality training and education in two crucial healthcare fields.
Program Highlights
-
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.): This program aims to develop highly trained pharmacists who can meet the diverse needs of the healthcare sector. The curriculum will combine clinical practice with pharmaceutical sciences, equipping graduates with the skills necessary for various roles within healthcare institutions, pharmacies, and research settings.
-
Speech Language Therapy (B.SLT): The B.SLT program focuses on training students to diagnose and treat speech, language, and communication disorders. By combining academic knowledge with hands-on experience, this program is designed to prepare students for careers in speech pathology, a field critical to improving the quality of life for individuals with communication challenges.
In tandem with the program launches, UNIMED’s Internal Audit Unit recently organized a capacity-building training session for its staff. This initiative aligns with the university’s goal of continuous staff development, ensuring that administrative and academic personnel are equipped with the skills necessary to support the institution's growth and academic excellence.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, expressed gratitude to the NUC for the prompt approval following the resource verification visit. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to providing the necessary human and material resources to support the new programs, ensuring that they meet the highest standards of education and training.
In an editorial note, Isaac Oluyi emphasized the importance of precision science research and thorough documentation in preserving institutional memory. He highlighted how the new academic offerings and staff capacity-building initiatives are in line with UNIMED’s broader mission of advancing medical and health sciences education.
With these new programs, UNIMED continues to strengthen its role as a leading institution in the healthcare education sector, offering students innovative pathways to make meaningful contributions to public health.
