UNIPORT Pro-Chancellor Calls for Exemplary Leadership from Student Union

The Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, University of Port Harcourt, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has urged the Student Union Government (SUG) to serve as a model of exemplary conduct and leadership, not only within the university but across Nigerian student unions.

The Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, University of Port Harcourt, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has urged the Student Union Government (SUG) to serve as a model of exemplary conduct and leadership, not only within the university but across Nigerian student unions.

Senator Ohuabunwa made this call during a meeting with members of the SUG at the council Chambers on Thursday November 7,2024 where he commended the union for its harmonious working relationship with the University Council. He encouraged the students to maintain this positive collaboration and continue fostering unity between the managemenr and the student body.

He also highlighted the university’s commitment to maintaining one of the lowest fee structures in the country, noting that this was a deliberate effort to ensure that all students, regardless of financial background, are able to afford their education and continue their studies without undue hardship.

“Despite the challenges faced by many institutions, we have managed to keep fees affordable. This is intentional, as we believe in providing opportunities for all students to access quality education,” Senator Ohuabunwa stated.

Furthermore, he assured students that under his leadership, the university would continue to improve its infrastructure and  promised to work with public-private partnerships to increase hostel accommodation on campus, ensuring that students have better living conditions.

In his remarks, the Student Union President, Comrade Harmony Lawrence, pledged that the union would work closely with the Council to create a peaceful and conducive atmosphere for the university’s growth. He assured the Pro-Chancellor that the SUG under his leadership would remain committed to upholding the values of unity, peace, and progress within the institution.

“We are committed to ensuring that there will be no activities that could be detrimental to the growth of this university. Together with the Council, we will strive to achieve the university’s objectives,” Comrade Harmony affirmed.
