The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has received approval from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to embark on a comprehensive rehabilitation of several student hostels, following widespread complaints and criticism over the appalling state of hostel facilities.

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has received approval from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to embark on a comprehensive rehabilitation of several student hostels, following widespread complaints and criticism over the appalling state of hostel facilities.

This move comes after students took to social media to anonymously share their bitter and unfortunate experiences, posting photos that revealed the sorry state of the hostels and prompting an outpouring of outrage from Nigerians online.

In response to the uproar, the university management sought and secured approval for massive renovations of the following hostels in the first phase of the project:

  • Goodluck Jonathan Hostel
  • Dan Etete Hostel
  • Claude Ake Hostels
  • Nelson Mandela Hostels A, B, C, D

These hostels are now set to receive extensive refurbishment both inside and outside, promising a new lease of life for the university’s accommodation facilities.

As part of the rehabilitation, the supply of 1,690 new student mattresses has also been approved, ensuring that students will not only enjoy better hostel structures but also improved basic amenities.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his intervention through TETFund, noting that the support will significantly uplift the welfare and living standards of students at the University of Port Harcourt.

This development marks a decisive step toward addressing the long-standing concerns of students and restoring confidence in the university’s commitment to providing a safe, clean, and conducive learning environment.
