In a solemn sermon following the observance of the two Rakah Eld-Fitri prayers at the University of Ibadan premises, Chief Imam Professor Muftau Abdulrahman Oloyede raised concerns about the detrimental impact of excessive social media use on the mental health of tertiary institution students.

Among the distinguished attendees at the Eld-Fitri prayer were notable figures such as former Governor of Oyo State and Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, Senator Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli representing Oyo South Senatorial District, and Senator Teslim Kolawole Folarin.

Addressing the gathering, Professor Oloyede lamented the alarming rise in mental health issues among students, attributing a significant portion of these cases to addiction and abuse of social media platforms. He urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children's social media usage, highlighting the potential risks associated with excessive screen time.

The Chief Imam underscored the importance of recognizing the dual nature of social media, acknowledging its benefits while cautioning against its dangers. He emphasized that prolonged periods spent online, often at the expense of adequate rest, were contributing to sleep disturbances and other mental health challenges among students.
