University of Maiduguri Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence
The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is marking its 25th Combined Convocation and Golden Jubilee Anniversary, highlighting significant achievements in academic reforms, digital transformation, infrastructure development, and research expansion.
UNIMAID Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, announced that the university has intensified reforms to strengthen academic standards, improve research visibility, and enhance student learning outcomes. Key initiatives include the full domestication of the National Universities Commission's Quality Assurance Framework and upgraded digital and physical learning resources.
UNIMAID is a beneficiary of the USD 617.7 million Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (IDICE) project, aimed at advancing digital innovation in the region. The university has also established the UNDP-UNIMAID UNIPod Innovation Hub, featuring laboratories for renewable energy, prototyping, electronics, and advanced engineering technology.
The university has renovated over 32 lecture theatres, upgraded staff offices, and improved street lighting and sanitation. Five new middle-aquifer boreholes have been drilled, funded by the Borno State Government.
A total of 20,164 graduates will be conferred with various degrees, including 66 PhDs, 1,020 Master's degrees, and 13,624 Bachelor's degrees. Notably, 205 Bachelor's degree graduates earned First Class honours.
The university will honour distinguished Nigerians and confer Professor Emeritus titles on notable scholars. The UNIMAID Endowment Fund has been established to support research, innovation, and scholarships, ensuring the university's financial stability .
