The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) community has recorded another milestone under the leadership of its Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, with the installation of solar-powered street lights across the institution.
According to the university, the initiative is part of the Acting Vice-Chancellor’s vision tagged “Feeling the Pulse of Students, Staff, and Finding Solutions.” The project seeks to address long-standing challenges of darkness and insecurity within the campus.
The newly installed solar-powered lights illuminate major walkways, student hostels, and other key areas of the university. The management noted that the intervention has enhanced safety for students and staff, while also making it easier for security personnel to carry out patrols at night.
Prof. Arinze-Umobi explained that the decision to prioritize the lighting project was based on her conviction that “where there is no light, there is no life.” She added that the “Light Up UNIZIK” vision demonstrates her administration’s commitment to improving the welfare and success of the entire university community.
The project has been widely welcomed by students and staff, who now enjoy improved conditions for studying, working, and social interaction after nightfall.7
