UNIZIK Upgrades Digital Library, Expands Capacity for Computer-Based Examinations

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has recorded major improvements in its digital library infrastructure, significantly enhancing the conduct and experience of computer-based examinations across the institution.

Speaking during an interview with the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), the Director of the Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), Professor Ike Onyenwe, attributed the progress to the support of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie.

He explained that the facility previously struggled with overcrowding and a limited number of functional computers, which created operational pressure during examinations, particularly for General Studies (GS) and Computer Science (CSC) courses.

According to him, the situation has now improved significantly. He noted that only about 380 computers were functional in the past, but the centre now operates with over 500 functional systems, enabling it to accommodate more than 500 students at a time with improved stability and reduced technical disruptions.

The Deputy Director of General Studies, Professor Ebele Ojukwu, corroborated the development, stating that earlier issues such as system glitches and interruptions during computer-based tests have been largely resolved. She described the current setup as more stable and efficient, adding that it has strengthened the credibility and smooth execution of examinations.

An invigilator, Dr. Lizzy Anierobi of the Department of Educational Management and Policy, also commended the upgrade, noting that it has eased supervision and improved overall exam management.

Medical support has also been integrated into the examination process, with healthcare personnel deployed on-site to respond promptly to emergencies involving students during exams, according to healthcare officer Ebuka Emmanuel.

Students have also expressed satisfaction with the improvements. One student, Ogbalimgba Chisom Lilian, described the process as smooth and well-coordinated, particularly commending the streamlined verification and check-in system. She, however, appealed for similar digital infrastructure expansion to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences campus in Agulu to reduce the need for students to travel to Awka.

The upgrade reflects UNIZIK’s ongoing push toward digital transformation and improved academic service delivery, positioning the institution for more efficient and scalable examination systems going forward.
