In a significant boost to innovation and sustainable energy development, the Africa Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Power and Energy Development (ACE-SPED), supported by the World Bank, has awarded N12 million in seed grants to 12 student research groups at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The award ceremony, held at UNN on Tuesday, showcased the groundbreaking initiatives of select student research teams who presented innovative ideas for sustainable energy and power development. Professor Emenike Ejiogu, Director of ACE-SPED and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UNN, highlighted the commercialization potential of the 12 research areas, emphasizing their capacity to address energy and power challenges within the African sub-region.

The ACE-SPED Innovation Seed Grants aim to provide financial support for research projects aligned with the innovation objectives of the Centre, focusing on electric power system development, renewable energy, waste-to-energy conversion, energy conservation, management, resource assessment, and forecasting, as well as sustainable energy solutions.

Professor Ejiogu underscored the Centre's commitment to practical engagement by involving students and staff in entrepreneurship and innovation activities. He further announced that the selected research groups would receive ongoing monitoring and additional funding support to facilitate their growth into viable businesses or companies, subject to their performance in future competitions.
