Young African-American Lady wins $25,000 English scholarship, set to study in the UK for free
A native of Manvel and an English major at Spelman College in Atlanta, Kyana Washington was selected as the recipient of the English in Action 2018-2019 Luard Morse Scholarship, which is administered by The English-Speaking Union.
Kyana Washington, a young African-American scholar, has achieved a significant milestone by winning the prestigious English in Action 2018-2019 Luard Morse Scholarship worth $25,000, enabling her to pursue her academic aspirations in the United Kingdom.
A native of Manvel and an English major at Spelman College in Atlanta, Kyana Washington was selected as the recipient of the English in Action 2018-2019 Luard Morse Scholarship, which is administered by The English-Speaking Union. The Executive Director of the English-Speaking Union, Christopher Broadwell, announced that Kyana is the deserving awardee of this scholarship.

This substantial scholarship fund will support Kyana during a semester of study at a university of her choice in the United Kingdom during the 2018-2019 academic year. Kyana expressed her joy and gratitude for receiving the scholarship, emphasizing the opportunity it provides to connect with like-minded and inspiring students and alumni from Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the nation.
Reflecting on her experience as a Luard Morse Scholarship finalist, Kyana described it as "an amazing experience" that allowed her to engage in thought-provoking discussions on feminism, literature, and current events. She credited this opportunity for inspiring her to continue her intellectual exploration and pursue her goal of advocating for women in her studies of both English and Philosophy.

Kyana is now faced with the exciting prospect of choosing between renowned institutions such as the University of Oxford, University College London, or Cambridge University for her higher education in the United Kingdom. During her time abroad, she intends to serve as an unofficial ambassador for the United States and subsequently, upon her return to Spelman College, for the United Kingdom.
While at Spelman College, Kyana focused on applying feminist theory to her English and philosophical studies. Her forthcoming academic journey in the United Kingdom will delve into Victorian literature, with the aim of analyzing the attitudes towards and held by women during that era. She aspires to make significant discoveries about the ideologies that shaped the role of women in society. In her philosophical pursuits, Kyana plans to investigate how Victorian philosophers viewed and depicted women, with a particular focus on how philosophy may have contributed to the oppression of women during that period.
