137 Federal Institutions Partner with NELFUND for Student Loan Program

A total of 137 federal institutions across Nigeria have collaborated with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), according to data released on Monday from the NELFUND website. The data did not disclose the names of the collaborating institutions but confirmed that they are federal government institutions.

NELFUND’s Head of Media, Nasir Ayitogo, confirmed the federal affiliation of the institution.Last Thursday, NELFUND announced its intention to publish a complete list of both federal and state-owned institutions that have submitted their student data for the NELFUND Student Verification System portal. This publication aims to ensure transparency and encourage participation in the loan scheme.

President Bola Tinubu signed the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act into law on April 3, 2024. The act, which had been reviewed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, empowers NELFUND to provide loans for tuition, fees, and living expenses to qualified Nigerian students in approved public tertiary and vocational institutions.

NELFUND's Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyer, previously stated that student access to loans would depend on institutional responses, with over 90% of federal institutions already collaborating with the Fund.
