200-Level UNILORIN Student Commits Suicide Over Financial Hardship

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic suicide of a 200-level student from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS). The deceased, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, reportedly ended his life due to severe financial difficulties.

Sources within the university revealed that the young man, a promising Mass Communication student with a commendable cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.5, had been struggling financially since the beginning of the academic session. The tragic incident occurred at his private residence in Oke-Odo, Tanke, Ilorin, over the past weekend.

Investigations indicate that the student had been facing financial constraints since losing his father a few years ago. His mother, a retired schoolteacher, had taken over the responsibility of funding his education. However, his financial struggles deepened upon resuming school last year, prompting his colleagues to contribute funds to assist him with tuition fees and basic necessities.

Despite these efforts, it appears that the weight of his financial burdens became unbearable. Reports suggest that he ingested a poisonous substance while his roommate was away for lectures. A note was found at the scene, in which he expressed his inability to cope with his economic challenges as the reason behind his drastic decision.

Upon returning from class, the roommate discovered the lifeless body and raised the alarm. The university administration has since confirmed the incident, with a senior official describing it as shocking and devastating. The official, who spoke anonymously, stated that the tragic event has left the entire university community in deep sorrow.
