Seven University of Ilorin academic staff have been recognized among the top 2% of leading scientists globally, showcasing the university's academic excellence.

7 UNILORIN Dons Listed Among Leading Scientists Worldwide

Seven academic staff members of the University of Ilorin have been named among the top 2% of leading scientists worldwide. These scholars were recognized for their remarkable contributions to global scientific research, further reinforcing the University's reputation for academic excellence. 

Among the distinguished scholars are Prof. Kayode John Oyewumi from the Department of Physics, former Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences; Prof. Musa Toyin Yakubu of the Biochemistry Department, who previously served as Dean of Student Affairs; and Dr. George Adewale Adeniyi from the Department of Chemical Engineering, a former UNILORIN Researcher of the Year. 

Other honorees include Dr. Mufutau Opeyemi Bello and Dr. Folorunso M. Ajide, both from the Department of Economics; Dr. Joseph Bamidele Awotunde from the Department of Computer Science; and Dr. Melody Okereke from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The recognition came from the Elsevier database, which is a publicly available repository of top-cited scientists. This ranking assesses researchers based on various criteria, including citations, h-index, and co-authorship-adjusted indices.

Reacting to the accolade, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN, expressed his delight over the global recognition of the institution's academic staff. He congratulated the scholars through the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, emphasizing the significance of every member of the university community contributing to its continued success. 

Prof. Egbewole remarked that this latest ranking has further positioned the University of Ilorin as one of Nigeria's top academic institutions and a leader in Africa. He encouraged other staff to emulate the hard work and dedication of these scholars as the institution strives to become one of the top 10 universities in Africa and among the leading 500 universities in the world.

The Elsevier ranking, published on September 16, 2024, highlights the university's ongoing efforts to maintain its standing as a hub of academic and research excellence.
