ABU Launches Energy Innovation Challenge Amidst Power Challenges
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has launched the ABU Energy and Innovation Challenge (ABUEIC) to develop local clean energy solutions following frequent electricity disruptions.
The initiative, led by Dr A S Abdulrasheed, aims to support practical energy solutions from students, staff and alumni. Dr Abdulrasheed was inspired by ABU's connection to Kainji Dam and ongoing power issues, securing a grant for the project.
Africa faces significant energy access challenges with over 600 million lacking electricity. Nigeria experiences grid failures despite its energy resources - 46 between 2017-2023, 12 in 2024 and 5 in 2025.
Kaduna's Education Commissioner Prof Abubakar Sani Sambo says ABU can generate power for itself and neighbours, praising university collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency. Prof Maryam Aminu, Faculty of Life Sciences Dean, sees ABUEIC as vital for sustainable energy linking academia, industry and government.
The Vice-Chancellor supports the initiative, with partners commending ABU's energy research capacity.
