ABU Students Win First Prize at Huawei ICT Skills Competition Global Finals in China

A team of students from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has emerged victorious at the Huawei ICT Skills Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China, from May 20th to 25th, 2025.

The team, known as "TeamABU2024," secured the first prize in the AI/Innovation Track with their innovative AI-powered CropDiseaseDetector.

The team, comprising Hadiza Mohammed (Department of Computer Science), Sufiyan Ibrahim (Department of Computer Engineering), and Lawal Dundu Haruna (Department of Computer Engineering), developed a device that detects diseases in various crops, including yam, cassava, rice, and others. The device also analyzes soil health and provides results and recommendations in multiple languages.

The team's instructor, Dr. Zaharuddeen Haruna, played a crucial role in guiding them to achieve this feat. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, commended the team for their achievement and assured them of the university's support to commercialize the product. The university plans to formalize the team into a club to ensure continuity and growth.

This win highlights ABU's commitment to fostering technological innovation and excellence on the global stage. TeamABU2024 had previously won the national and regional rounds of the competition, earning their spot at the global finals in Shenzhen.
