Panic has spread through the Ekiti State University (EKSU) community following a violent attack on a group of students at the Iworoko Mountain area on Thursday, where two armed men reportedly dispossessed them of valuables and caused widespread fear among undergraduates and residents.

According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, armed with cutlasses and canes, intercepted the students who had visited the mountain for leisure activities. The attackers allegedly ordered the victims to kneel before seizing over fifty mobile phones and other personal belongings. Though no fatal injuries were recorded, the incident left many of the students shaken and traumatized.

Sources within the university revealed that the attackers fled into the nearby forest immediately after the robbery, evading capture. The assault, which occurred in broad daylight, has since raised serious safety concerns within the campus and neighboring Iworoko community.

In reaction to the development, the Management of Ekiti State University issued a strong warning to all students to avoid the Iworoko Mountain vicinity until further notice. The University stressed that it is working closely with security agencies to ensure the safety of all students and to prevent a recurrence of such attacks.

A statement from the University’s Security Unit confirmed that a joint operation involving the EKSU Security Team and the Ekiti State Police Command has been launched to track down the suspects. Preliminary intelligence indicates that the attackers may belong to a group known for targeting isolated areas around the university’s environs.

Security operatives have intensified patrols around routes leading to the mountain and other remote locations near the campus. Residents and students have been advised to restrict movement in those areas, especially at dawn and late hours, until security operations are concluded.

Meanwhile, several students have taken to social media to express outrage over the attack, calling for stronger security measures within and around the university. Many lamented the increasing insecurity and urged the state government to support EKSU in bolstering campus safety.

The President of the EKSU Students’ Union Government described the incident as “an urgent reminder that student welfare must remain a top priority,” stressing the need for closer collaboration between the University, local authorities, and host communities.
