The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has voiced deep disappointment regarding the recently constituted governing councils for federal universities in Nigeria, describing the composition as even worse than the previous ones.

ASUU’s national president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed his concerns about the newly released list of council members. He criticized the predominance of "retired politicians" on the list, arguing that they lack the technical expertise and academic understanding necessary for effective governance of universities.
"The composition of the newly constituted governing councils is a cause for serious concern," Prof Osodeke remarked. "We are seeing more retired politicians and fewer technocrats, which does not bode well for the universities' management and academic development."
ASUU's initial grievances regarding the university governing councils extend beyond the calibre of individuals appointed. According to Prof Osodeke, the union's primary objection lies in the legality of constituting new councils before the previous ones had completed their tenures.

The dissolution of the previous councils over 10 months ago was viewed by ASUU as premature and contrary to the provisions of the University Act governing their tenure.
