BREAKING: ASUU Threatens Two-Week Warning Strike After Giving Federal Government 14-Day Ultimatum
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement its long-negotiated agreement or risk a two-week warning strike, following the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on September 29, 2025.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement submitted since February 2025 or face a two-week warning strike. Following its emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on September 29, ASUU expressed disappointment over the government’s inaction despite earlier communication with relevant ministries. The union urged members to remain united and mobilised as it pushes for improved welfare, an end to brain drain, and reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s university system.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement transmitted since February 2025 or face a two-week warning strike.
In a statement following its National Executive Council (NEC) emergency meeting held on September 29, 2025, ASUU said the ultimatum comes after evaluating referendum results from its branches across the country. The union expressed disappointment that one week after communicating its resolutions to the Ministers of Labour and Education, as well as the Nigeria Labour Congress, there has been “no meaningful development.”

ASUU’s president reaffirmed the union’s commitment to defending members’ welfare, curbing brain drain in the education sector, and repositioning the Nigerian University System for global competitiveness. He called on members to remain united, mobilised, and take directives only from their branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators as the union enters the final week of the ultimatum.
