The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi has postponed the resumption of students to January 7, 2024, following a tragic incident that led to the death of a final year Geology student, Joseph Agabaidu.

Agabaidu was reportedly stabbed by assailants while attempting to retrieve his girlfriend’s bag that had been snatched. The incident occurred in the Yelwan Tudu market area, a suburb of the Bauchi metropolis. Despite being rushed to the ATBU Teaching Hospital, Agabaidu succumbed to his injuries.

The incident sparked a protest among the students, who expressed their anger at the inadequate security in and around the campus. In response to the upheaval, the university management shut down the school for an initial one-week period and directed students to vacate the campus immediately.
