Bayero University Kano Elevates Centre for Qur'anic Studies to Centre of Excellence
Bayero University Kano (BUK) has announced plans to upgrade its Centre for Qur'anic Studies to a Centre of Excellence.
This initiative aims to advance Qur'anic scholarship and integrate the traditional tsangaya system into modern academic structures. The university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, stated that the Centre will serve as a hub for advanced instruction, research, and community engagement, providing a robust platform for the study, memorization, and interpretation of the Qur'an.
To promote qualitative Islamic scholarship and sound appreciation of Qur'anic studies through research, documentation, enlightenment, training, and capacity-building programs.
The Centre is expected to become a leading force in Qur'anic education in Nigeria and across the West African region, bridging the gap between traditional Islamic learning and contemporary academic frameworks.
The Vice-Chancellor has called on other institutions, government bodies, and philanthropic individuals to invest in Qur'anic and Islamic education by establishing centres of excellence.
Bayero University Kano emerged winner of the maiden edition of the Nigerian Universities Qur'anic Recitation Competition (NUQRIC). The competition was held at the university's Convocation Arena, with Abdusamad Bello, a Level 400 student in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, emerging as the overall winner in the 60 Hizb category. He was awarded a cash prize of N700,000.
The Director of the Centre for Qur'anic Studies, Professor Ahmad Murtala, described the competition as a strategic initiative aimed at promoting Islamic knowledge, particularly Qur'anic memorization .
