Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, joined the global community to commemorate World International Microorganism Day (IMD), a day set aside to highlight the essential role of microorganisms in medicine, health, industry, and the environment.

Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, joined the global community to commemorate World International Microorganism Day (IMD), a day set aside to highlight the essential role of microorganisms in medicine, health, industry, and the environment.

As part of the event, the Department of Microbiology, under the leadership of Dr. (Mrs.) Chidinma Dakore-Olukole, Director of Academic Planning and Innovation (DAPRI), paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dimie Ogoina, to present the activities lined up for this year’s commemoration. The visit included both staff and students of the Department.

Welcoming the delegation, the Vice-Chancellor applauded the initiative, emphasizing the dual nature of microorganisms as both allies and adversaries. He recalled his inaugural lecture where he described them as “disease associates, adversaries, and allies,” noting their critical importance in antibiotic production, biotechnology, and overall human health.

Speaking further on the significance of the day, Dr. Marie Teibowei, Senior Assistant Vice-Chancellor and Public Relations Officer (SAVC/PRO), said the event reflects BMU’s strong commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, encouraging innovation, and fostering awareness about the invisible but powerful world of microorganisms.
