The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has commended the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for its strong security architecture and consistently peaceful academic environment, describing the institution as a benchmark for effective campus security in Nigeria.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has commended the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for its strong security architecture and consistently peaceful academic environment, describing the institution as a benchmark for effective campus security in Nigeria.

The commendation was given on Thursday, December 18, during the End-of-the-Year Annual Lecture and Thanksgiving Programme of the University of Lagos Security Unit, held at the Jelili Adebisi Omotola Multipurpose Hall ‘C’.
Delivering a lecture titled “The Standard Campus Security: The Standard Peace of the Nation,” CP Jimoh stressed that campus security must be treated as a national priority, noting that universities play a critical role in shaping future leaders and citizens.
He stated that the level of peace and stability in the country is directly influenced by the security culture within institutions of learning, adding that orderly and well-secured campuses foster discipline, responsibility, and civic consciousness among students.
The Commissioner identified infrastructure as a foundational element of effective security, emphasising the importance of adequate lighting, steady power supply, and functional facilities in protecting lives and property on campus.
He noted that security operations are significantly impaired in poorly lit or inadequately powered environments, stressing that visibility, surveillance, and response efficiency depend largely on supportive infrastructure.
To illustrate the impact of environment on security outcomes, CP Jimoh compared a vehicle breakdown in Bourdillon, Ikoyi, with a similar situation around the Oshodi axis, explaining that the likelihood of vandalism is shaped by environmental order, surveillance, and preparedness rather than chance.

He further highlighted personnel welfare, deployment of modern security technologies, intelligence-led operations, and sound institutional policies as essential components of sustainable campus security.
Commending the University’s leadership under the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, CP Jimoh noted that since assuming office over ten months ago, he had not been required to intervene in any riot or violent incident within the University.
According to him, the absence of such incidents reflects the effectiveness of UNILAG’s security systems and proactive management approach.
The former Nigerian Police Force Public Relations Officer assured the University of the continued support of the Nigeria Police Force and called on all stakeholders to embrace collective responsibility in sustaining peace and security on campus.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, represented by the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Abraham Osinubi, expressed appreciation to members of the Security Unit for their dedication and professionalism.
She encouraged them to remain innovative and proactive, reaffirming the University’s commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and harassment-free academic environment where all members of the community are treated equally, regardless of background.
The Chairman of the occasion, Major General E.O. Oshunsan, represented by Colonel C.P. Enihuando, described the programme as a strategic platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange between academic institutions and security agencies, noting that such partnerships are vital to preventing security challenges before they escalate.
In his remarks, the Coordinator of the University of Lagos Security Unit, Mr. Omotosho, thanked the Commissioner of Police and other stakeholders for their sustained support and collaboration. He attributed the peaceful campus atmosphere to deliberate planning, teamwork, and strong institutional backing.
He reaffirmed the Unit’s commitment to professionalism, vigilance, and continuous improvement, assuring the University community of the adoption of modern, intelligence-driven, and proactive security strategies.
A panel session formed a major part of the programme, addressing emerging security concerns and practical solutions for safer campuses. Panelists included the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Musa Adebayo Obalola; Deputy Commissioner of Police Dayo Aninbiseyin; Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Bamgbose; and public commentator, Mr. Afolabi Akinola.
Moderated by Mr. Adebayo Salau, discussions focused on policy reforms, student engagement, inter-agency collaboration, and technology-driven security models.

The event drew dignitaries from across sectors, including the member of the 10th Assembly representing Lagos Mainland Constituency II, Hon. Shabi Rasheed Adebola Adekola, and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, who served as Father of the Day, underscoring the programme’s relevance to national security discourse within the academic space.
