The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, has disclosed that the Federal Government is in the process of reconstituting the governing councils of its universities nationwide. Maiyaki stated that the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has formed a panel to finalize the list of individuals who will serve on these councils.

Addressing education reporters in Abuja, Maiyaki confirmed that the inauguration of the councils will take place once the selection process is completed. He acknowledged the significance of this step, recognizing the impact of the absence of governing councils on university administration.

Responding to the two-week ultimatum issued by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) regarding the reconstitution of these councils, Maiyaki emphasized the government's commitment to appointing qualified individuals with the right expertise to the councils.

The dissolution of the governing councils of all federal universities and boards of other agencies and corporations across the country was announced by the NUC on June 22nd of the previous year, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu. This move aimed to streamline governance structures and ensure efficiency in public institutions.
