Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) organized a career guidance programme for secondary school students in Ondo State as part of its 36th Convocation Ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, aimed at equipping students with practical insights into career planning and skill acquisition.

Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) organized a career guidance programme for secondary school students in Ondo State as part of its 36th Convocation Ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, aimed at equipping students with practical insights into career planning and skill acquisition.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, emphasized the importance of self-reliance through skill acquisition, advising students to develop critical thinking skills and conduct thorough research on their career choices. She highlighted FUTA’s unique programs, such as Engineering Drawing in the first year, Farming in the second year, and Entrepreneurship training, which are designed to prepare students for meaningful societal contributions.

Professor Oladiji also stressed FUTA’s innovative approach in addressing societal needs, citing the recent introduction of Data Science and Medical Science programs to meet global trends and pressing challenges, demonstrating the university’s commitment to staying ahead in education and research.

Professor Adebanjo Badejo, Chairman of the Career Talk Committee and Professor of Food Science and Technology, explained that the annual programme is intended to familiarize students with the university’s diverse courses and requirements. He noted that while traditional courses such as Medicine, Law, and Engineering remain popular, technological advancements have introduced new fields of study, encouraging students to explore less competitive courses to promote diversity and better opportunities.

Representatives from various FUTA schools, including the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT), School of Life Sciences, School of Environmental Technology (SET), School of Infrastructure, Mineral and Material Engineering (SIMME), and College of Health Sciences, provided detailed information on course offerings, UTME subject combinations, and the benefits of pursuing each program.

Professor Oluwayemisi Adeparusi, Chairman of the Ceremonial Committee, commended the efforts of the Career Talk Committee and encouraged students to leverage the guidance provided while supplementing it with independent reading and research to broaden their knowledge and understanding of career pathways.

Several secondary schools attended the programme, including St. Peter Unity Secondary School, FUTA Staff Secondary School, Anglican Grammar School Ijare, St. Louis Grammar School Akure, Wexford College Akure, and St. Dominic High School Akure, among others, providing a diverse platform for engagement and learning.
