Former University Librarian Sentenced to Five Years for Fraudulent Book Sales

A 40-year-old former university librarian, Adedeji Ogunleye, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court for selling the institution's books.

Ogunleye was convicted on charges of stealing and fraud after being arraigned on January 9, 2023. He was accused of stealing and fraudulently obtaining N17.5 million from the sales of university books, converting the money for personal use.

Inspector Elijah Adejare, the prosecutor, presented four witnesses and various exhibits, including auditor's statements and university bookshop receipts.

Despite being granted bail, Ogunleye absconded, leading to a trial in absentia. In delivering the judgment, Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola found Ogunleye guilty and sentenced him to five years imprisonment with hard labor or restitution of N17,466,692.46 to the university bookshop.

The court ordered security agencies to apprehend Ogunleye wherever he is found to serve his term of imprisonment.
