The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), widely recognized as Africa’s leading University of Agriculture and ranked seventh globally, reaffirmed its position at the forefront of agricultural innovation as it hosted the 2025 Humboldt Kolleg Scientific Conference which opened on September 22, 2025.
The three-day international gathering, themed “AI-Driven Approach to Regenerative Agriculture for Sustainable Food Production, Food Safety, and Environmental Preservation,” brought together researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to examine how artificial intelligence and regenerative practices can reshape global food systems, protect the environment, and enhance economic growth across Africa.

Declaring the event open, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, described the conference as timely. He reiterated FUNAAB’s commitment to advancing innovative research and fostering partnerships that integrate AI into agriculture for improved productivity, food safety, and environmental sustainability.
In a presentation, University Librarian, Prof. Abayomi Owolabi, represented by Dr. Fauziyah Adenekan, highlighted Africa’s underrepresentation in global AI investment, noting that the continent receives only 0.3 percent despite its vast potential. He warned that Africa risks being sidelined in the AI-driven economy, not because of a lack of talent, but due to its overlooked role in shaping the future. He emphasized that the continent’s youthful workforce remains a powerful driver of innovation and food security.
Conference Convener, Prof. Olufemi Ojo, who also serves as the University’s Desk Officer for the German Consulate in Nigeria, welcomed participants and urged them to fully engage with the sessions while experiencing the cultural richness of Abeokuta. He also expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for supporting the initiative.
Delivering the keynote address, Provost of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan, Prof. Jonathan Atungwu, called on governments and private investors to strengthen support for farmers by promoting regenerative systems, offering environmental stewardship training, and providing access to affordable credit. He stressed the importance of policies that guarantee sustainable food production for future generations.
Another major presentation was delivered by Prof. Simeon Cadmus of the University of Ibadan, who examined the link between climate change and the rise of emerging and re-emerging diseases in Africa. He cautioned that climate-induced risks to human and animal health require urgent and proactive research responses.

The conference also featured panel discussions, goodwill messages, and networking opportunities that reinforced the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
By hosting this high-profile event, FUNAAB has further consolidated its reputation as Africa’s agricultural think tank and a global leader in advancing innovative solutions for food security and environmental preservation.
